Should I worry that I'm consuming too much Vitamin B12?Updated 8 days ago
We chose the levels that we did for B12 because it is established that at best, 50% of the amount included in the formula will be absorbed as it relies heavily on digestive capacity.
We discuss in our B vitamins blog post the importance of vitamin B12 and some of the things that increase needs and reduce absorption. The other thing to not is that there are no upper limits established for vitamin B12 because intake above the RDA (which are always an estimated of the minimum requirement not the requirement for optimal health) has not been associated with chronic disease. There have been links in the research to issues that may be correlated to high intakes of cyanocobalamin, a different form of B12 that is common in supplements but we do not use this in our formulation.
Emerging research also suggests that even when maternal B12 levels are very high, the baby regulates how much it absorbs, ensuring it stays within the ideal range for healthy development.
We'd recommend checking out this research that suggests that maintaining an adequate maternal vitamin B12 status during early pregnancy contributes to improved working memory performance at 4 years of age. This really highlights the importance of screening for and maintaining adequate vitamin B12 levels during this critical period.
Rest assured that in determining amounts to use in FullWell, we looked at the best available evidence, considered its role in the body and metabolism, and had the formula peer reviewed. We feel very confident in its safety.
